OpenSky – A Better Shopping Experience for Blog Readers

The OpenSky Project What will OpenSky do for the blogosphere?

In a nutshell, OpenSky will epically improve the shopping experiences to be had by blog readers the world over.  Gone will be the days of bouncing around the interwebz between reviews and retail websites.  Instead, OpenSky is making it absolutely possible for your favorite bloggers to give you quick, easy and secure access to the products they love and want to share with you.

Love the reviews you’re reading from a certain blogger?  Awesome, because OpenSky will make it so that if you do choose to purchase the item in question, you just might be able to buy it from that blogger, which will support said blogger, thus exponentially increasing the chance that he or she will continue to be able to create reviews and other content for your consumerist pleasure!

Raising the Bar for New York State Students

Just this week, the New York State Department of Education announced that they would be increasing the minimum scores necessary to reach the level of proficiency needed for the standardized state tests taken by children from grades 3-8.  One of the reasons behind this decision is the fact that about 25% of all students in 2 and 4 year colleges in New York State take remedial classes.  (source)

What is the definition of remedial?

remedial [ri-mee-dee-uhl]

  • Intended to correct or improve deficient skills in a specific subject

I wholeheartedly believe that every person who wishes to attend a higher institution of learning should be afforded the opportunity to do so, but it is utterly disappointing to know that one in four New York youths who indeed have the drive and ambition to attend college aren’t even ready for the most basic core classes.

Review: Pop On Pals Are Great for Pretend Play and Fine Motor Skill Development

Pop on Pals Amusement Park Playset Pop On Pals is a brand new line of toys for children ages 2-4, and it’s geared towards not only fun, but development as well!  The super cute little characters can be mixed and matched, and with the easy to handle pop on rings, you can turn your ballerina into a firefighter or your musician into a princess.  This new line offers tons of different vehicles and extra packs to choose from, so there’ll be lots of choices for your child, and no end to the possibilities for imaginative pretend play.  Because of the nature of the pop-on components of the Pop on Pals line, these toys are also great for encouraging the development of you’re child’s fine motor skills.

Dead Car Batteries, Bootable Flash Drives and Long Lost Friendships

I learned three very important lessons today:

  1. At the time when you need electricity to power an external battery to fix one of your cars, chances are the power will go off for the entire block.
  2. Mounting an ISO then copying the files over to a USB flash drive will NOT automatically result in a bootable USB drive.
  3. It’s really in your best interest to not look like a total slob when frequenting your local Target or other mass market merchandiser, lest you later regret it.

One and two and pretty much self explanatory.  Today I want to focus on number three.

Because today was the day our desktop computer decided to present me with the mortifyingly painful and stress inducing blue screen of death, I was in need of blank CDs for the file recovery process.  Absolutely awesome.  So I headed over to our local Target, and as usual, ended up tossing about 20 other things I did not initially plan on purchasing into the cart.  Doubly awesome.

Can’t see the video above?

Watch it on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6NiaQqllXQ or on Vimeo: http://vimeo.com/13653609

Orange Julius… mmm!  I had a sudden craving for orange julius this weekend, so I checked out a few generic recipes online, and then I adapted them to suit.

5 Baby Shower Gift Ideas Under $30 and Better Than Diaper Cakes

Not that I dislike diaper cakes, but seriously, folks, there are plenty of other baby shower gifts I’d rather get if I got pregnant again.  Diapers, being absolutely necessary to be successful in the art of childrearing (wonk, wonk), are always appreciated of course.  It’s just that receiving a ribbon and plastic wrap encased two foot tall diaper cake is not all that memorable.  Or unique.  Or awesome.

If you really want to wow the mom to be, save the money you were thinking of spending on that custom designed, three tier diaper castle and get her something she’ll really love.  Have your heart set on presenting mama with diapeys?  First, consider getting her something else, and then go ahead and throw in a gift card to Diapers.com or get her a combo box of size 1 and 2 diapers from Costco (not newborn size.. never newborn size).
