Parents warned of virulent infection after the fact

On October 14th, a boy infected with the Staph bacteria died, and the parents of other children enrolled at the Brooklyn public school this boy attended weren’t notified until weeks later.

At this point, NYC public school officials have done a thorough “wash-down” of the school, but the health commissioner for the city is cited as saying,

“Just please remember that cleaning of the environment is very unlikely to make any difference in the spread of infection. It’s something that’s done so people feel better, but this isn’t what’s going to reduce the spread of bacteria.”

While it is believed that it is the staph infection that led to the boy’s demise, it won’t be known for sure until after the autopsy is complete.

What do you think about this?

How would you feel if you were informed of the death of your child’s schoolmate due to a “virulent, drug-resistent strain of a bacteria” not days, but weeks after the fact?

Important Recall Information – Britax Marathon car seat

I just wanted to let all the parents and grandparents of infants and toddlers out there know about this safety recall, just in case you haven’t heard about it yet but may be affected.  It involves the top tether hook of Britax Marathon child restraints with the model #s E9L06, E9W06, or E906 and were manufactured from May 23, 2006 through July 28, 2006.

Apparently, if you use the top tether when you connect the restaint in the car and you have a child who weighs over 50lbs is in the seat, “upon vehicle impact, the top tether hook may open and have the potential to release from the tether anchor.  In the event of a crash, the child may move forward further….”  You can read more about the recall  here.  If you have a model that is affected and you did not get a notice or hadn’t registered your car seat, you can also register for the recall there, as they have sent out replacement tethers to owners of the models that may be affected.  This recall was announced on October 19, 2007.

Click on the thumbnails below to read the notices and see the replacement tether that was sent to owners of the possibly affected Britax Marathon child restraints who registered their seat on the Britax site.

If the photo shows up blurry and you can’t read it, click on it to make sure it’s being shown at 100% and not scaled down.

Birth Control for Middle School Students?

Have you heard about this yet?

When the Portland, Maine, School Committee voted 7-2 Wednesday night to make birth control pills available to middle school girls as young as 11, the response provided the latest evidence that adults still have trouble talking about sex with each other, much less with our kids. The debate was passionate, as you’d expect over an issue that touches so deeply our concerns about what our kids know and do — and when — and the messages we send them. To school officials and public health advocates who favored the measure, this was a question of confronting reality. Five of the 134 students who visited King Middle School’s health center last year admitted they were sexually active; in the last four years, Portland’s three middle schools reported 17 pregnancies, not counting miscarriages or unreported pregnancies that ended in abortions….
