Is Your New Year’s Resolution to Lose Weight? Join Discovery Health’s National Body Challenge!

928993_2008It’s a new year, so make this the year that you’ll stick to your goal of getting into better health and shape… not only for yourself, but for your family!  Remember, children will learn most if not all of their eating and exercise habits from their parents, and even if your child has the fastest metabolism ever, sooner or later a poor diet filled with junk food and lacking healthy essentials, as well as a sedentary lifestyle may take take it’s toll.

In essence, I know that you, like me, are interested in losing that extra tubbiness and eating healthier and exercising more not just because we want to look good, but because we want to feel good, be healthier and set good examples for our children.

I know it get’s hard, and it’s sooo easy to procrastinate when it comes to exercise, but I’m definitely making an effort (and will continue to) stick to my New Year’s resolution of , and I hope you do too!

BTFColorverticalDHC-1I joined the National Body Challenge (see my post about it on my personal blog), a program by the Discovery Health network that entitles its participants to free info, motivational and educational videos and articles, recipes, a progress tracker, special National Body Challenge programming on the Discovery channel and more.  You even get….. a FREE 8 week trial gym membership to Bally Total Fitness.  How awesome-tastic is that?… as far as I know, most Bally locations offer babysitting/playroom services for children as young as 2 or 3, so you can bring the kiddos along (double check the age requirements and the hours with the location you choose to join, of course!).

Let me know if you join the challenge!  I’m über excited about it, and I’m going to activate my trial at Bally’s tomorrow morning.  Click on this link at the Discovery Health website to find out more about the National Body Challenge, which officially started today, but don’t worry, you can still join.

Children’s Book Review – The Magic Violin by Mayra Calvani (Illustrated by K.C. Snider)

316-wzgl6cl_aa_sl160_.jpgSet in 20th-century Brussels, The Magic Violin is an inspiring and uplifting book about a young girl and her realization that believing in oneself can have a very magical outcome.

The story is about 8-year-old Melina, who is despondent because she doesn’t think she’ll be able to learn a new (and difficult!) song on her violin.  As you’ll see, all Melina really needs is a dose of self-confidence and a dash of magic.

The Magic Violin is perfect for children ages 5-9, especially those who are learning a new instrument, sport or hobby; and of course, this would be the perfect addition to a young aspiring violinist’s library.  It’s truly a wonderful story to share with your child about the power of effort and faith in oneself, as well as the importance of kindness.

I enjoyed the book, and when I finished reading it, I had a smile on my face.  There are many children (and adults, for that matter) who lack the confidence to “keep at” a hobby, a project, or (violin) lessons, just because they lose the hope that they can do it with a little bit of effort and little self-esteem boost.  Mayra’s book definitely has a strong message, one that is important and everlasting.  For children and jaded adults alike, The Magic Violin will lift spirits and just may give you and your child the boost to believe in your power to reach your goals.
